Canes Ranked #2 in Preseason Poll

Yet again, the University of Miami has established itself as a prestigious school, not only known for their football program, but for their baseball program as well.

The Canes are four-time national championships, winning the title in 1982, 1985, 1999 and 2001. The Canes hope to run for the title this year.

A poll released by Baseball America has the Canes in the number two spot behind the Owls of Rice University. Below are the top 10 teams in the poll:

  1. Rice

  2. Miami

  3. Clemson

  4. Texas

  5. North Carolina

  6. South Carolina

  7. Arkanas

  8. Vanderbilt

  9. Virginia

  10. Wichita State

According to the official athletic site for UM, "It is always good to have the Hurricanes' baseball program recognized by the media who cover the sport," said UM head baseball coach Jim Morris. "I am very excited about the upcoming season and the potential this club has despite losing seven players from last year's team to the Major League Baseball draft. We have a challenge ahead of us with the Atlantic Coast Conference again being extremely competitive and a very strong non-conference schedule."

The Canes will open the 2007 season playing in the alumni game, which will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Mark Light Stadium. They will host a three-game series against Mercer beginning on Feb. 2.

Hopefully, the Canes will make it to the College World Series this season and bring home another national championship title.
